The story so far
Growing up on the south coast of England I learnt to sail and windsurf from a young age. Seeking to combine my love of the sea with a passion for the Arts and Sciences led me to pursuing yacht design and achieving a Masters Degree in Naval Architecture at the University of Southampton.
After graduating I joined SP Technologies (now Gurit) as a Design Engineer, where many of the race boats passing through the office would land on my desk, giving me an opportunity to work alongside many of the most prominent yacht designers at the time.
Having collaborated with Reichel Pugh Yacht Design I was thrilled to be offered a position to join their team in San Diego, USA, where I headed up several designs, both racers and cruisers, before heading back to Europe to join the design team for an Italian syndicate for the 32nd Americas Cup in Valencia, Spain.
Remaining in Valencia, I joined the design team for BMW Oracle Team, helping to successfully win the Americas Cup in a deed of gift challenge with their large wing sailed trimaran.
This period was interspersed by consultancy work for several design offices, including winning the Volvo Ocean Race with the Ericsson Team and JYD, plus several successful custom and production yachts.
In 2011 I moved back to Lymington, UK, and founded McCafferty Design to continue offering independent technical and conceptual design support for teams, companies and individuals seeking performance; with a particular emphasis on lightweight, efficient and, increasingly often, foiling craft.
During this time, I have developed a holistic approach that combines the widespread technical knowledge, methods and partnerships formed over the years working within the industry, to offer a complete design service.
By combining innovative ideas, advanced structures and hydrodynamic efficiency – whether the primary goal is carving waves, winning races or reducing emissions – I’m excited to see where it will take us.
